Car Sales Analysis For June 2020: Maruti Suzuki Takes the Lead, Followed by Hyundai Motors

The automotive sector in India had taken a hit due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic but has been slowly picking up the pace and getting out of the slump. The various car manufactures in India have opened up operations and gaining momentum. 

In April of 2020, India recorded 0 sales in the automotive sector, which came as a disappointing shock. However, with ease on restrictions in May 2020, the car sales rose to 36,697, with Maruti Suzuki taking the lead, followed by Hyundai and then Tata Motors. 

When we compare June 2020 sales to May 2020, there has been a rise of 218 percent, however as compared to June 2019, there has been a fall of 53.9 percent. 

Car Sales Analysis For June 2020

A total of 1,16,969 units were sold in June 2020, which we will break down for you below:

  • Maruti Suzuki led the sales in June 2020, with 51,274 units sold, a rise of 274.3 percent from the previous month. For the company, the top three best selling cars were Alto (with 7,298 units sold), Wagon R (with 6,972 units sold), and Dzire (with 5,834 units sold).
  • The second-highest number of automotive sold came from Hyundai Motors, with the number standing at 21,320, a rise from 6,883 in May 2020. For them, the best-selling car has been the new Hyundai Creta, with sales of 7,209 units in June 2020. The second-best-selling car has been Venue (with 4,129 units), followed by Grand i10 (with 3,593 units)
  • At the third position was Tata Motors, with a sale of 11,419 in June 2020, a rise of 262.1 percent from May 2020 sales which stood at 3,153. In the case of Tata Motors, Tata Tiago has been the best performing car with sales of 4,069 units, followed by Altroz (at 3,104 units) and Nexon (with 3,040 units).
  • Mahindra & Mahindra occupied the 4th position with a total of 8,075 sales, an increase of 108.8 percent from the previous month. The top three best selling cars for Mahindra are the Mahindra Bolero (with 3,292 units sold), Scorpio (1,812 units), and XUV300 (1,812 units). 
  • Kia Motors occupied the 5th position in terms of the number of sales, with 7,200 units sold. As compared to May 2020, this was 333.5 percent. The key performing car for Kia has been the Seltos SUV, with 7,114 units sold in June, and 161 units sold of Carnival MPV. 

The sixth best performing automotive company in India in June 2020 was Renault, with a total of 4,634 units sold. Next up was Toyota, with 3,866 units sold, followed by Ford at the eighth position with 2,639 units sold. The ninth and tenth position was occupied by MG motors (2,012 units) and Volkswagen (1,510 units) respectively.
